Wrist BP monitors VS Upper arm BP monitors…

Some specialists claim that the wrist monitors are not as accurate as their upper arm counterparts. However, all of my research points to them being just as accurate. In fact, there are lots of doctor offices that use wrist monitors – most likely because they are easier to use and less intrusive.

Whether using an upper arm unit or a wrist unit there will be a margin of error. When comparing the results from wrist BP monitors and upper arm units some have said that the results differ only slightly. Both are said to be clinically proven to be accurate.

For most, what is important is that wild swings up or down are monitored.

Appearance and Size

Unless you are familiar with these units you probably wouldn’t be able to differentiate these devices from any of the other activity monitors on the market, i.e. fit bit or smart phones. This gives these machines a huge benefit – discretion.

There are two units that are part of the 7 series, the BP654 and BP654N – the former being a wireless/Bluetooth capable model. Both the BP654N (7 series) and the 3 series are white in color while the BP654 is grey (I think that the grey color makes it even more discreet). Both displays are large and easy to read and understand. The 7 series has a bit of an updated design as it looks more modern and thus aesthetically pleasing in my opinion. There is a Velcro strap on all models.

All three of these units are about the same size about 4 inches by 5 inches. The wrist straps are large enough to accommodate very large wrist and small ones as well. Some users claim that they are able to fit the unit underneath their clothes.

Simple Operation

You don’t have to be intimidated by the process of having your blood taken anymore. With any of these models listed on this page there is a simple process.

All you have to do is strap the monitor on then press the start button. The machine will do the rest. Both 7 series models have what’s called “Heart Zone Guidance”. In order to get the best readout, your arm needs to be level with your heart. There are orange and blue indicator lights. When the light is orange you need to raise you’re a little more and when it’s blue you’re good to go and the machine will start working automatically.

When it is finished working you will have a readout of your blood pressure (diastolic/systolic) and your pulse. All of these monitors will check for irregularities in your heartbeat. You will be alerted if there are any.

Tracking Your Readings

With the all three of the models on this page you will be able to store your blood pressure readings. The 3 series model can store up to 60 readings and both of the 7 series models can store up to 100 readings.

Bluetooth

Only the BP654 (7 series) is Bluetooth capable. Not only will you be able to store up to 100 readings in the unit itself but you can also sync your results to your mobile device. With this feature you will be able to access your numbers any time whether you’re at home or not. This is a really convenient feature. You can even use it to send your readings over to your doctor.

Silence is Golden

Blood pressure machines can be noisy. This definitely makes sense as they pump air.  But the 3 series model will be louder than the others.

But the machines in the 7-series has “ultra-quiet operation”. As air gently and smoothly enters the machine very little noise is created in the process. Also, when the air is discharged from either of these machines there is little noise produced.

Silent operation means that you won’t disturb anyone when you use it. It also adds to your privacy.

Storage Case

Only the BP654 (wireless 7 series model) comes with a carrying case.

Warranty

Both of the 7 series models (BP654 and BP654N) come with a 5-year limited warranty while the 3 Series (BP629) comes with a 3-year warranty.

Summary

All of the models in the Omron 3 series vs 7 series are good choices. But if I were choosing, I’d go with the 7-series Bluetooth model BP654. With its Bluetooth capability, you can keep track of your BP results and access them using the app at any time you want.

Depending on when you buy, you may have to pay a premium for the added feature but when I checked it wasn’t that much of a difference.
