Dyson AM07 vs AM08: Which Bladeless Air Multiplier Should You Get…?

Appearance and Size

Dyson Air Multiplier AM07

I first saw a Dyson fan in a Costco store. And upon initial look, I had no idea what the darn thing was. I mean, it certainly didn’t look like your traditional fan. You won’t find and fan blades that are visible from the outside. You won’t find any grates either. It wasn’t until I got in the path of it’s air flow that I knew what it was.

The AM07 is an air mover tower fan while the AM08 is a pedestal fan. Both are available in black, white, and blue. All of the colors look great. But I really like the blue, it looks pretty slick.

The AM07 measures 9.1 deep x 9.1 wide x 39.6 tall inches while the AM08 is 6.6 deep x 23.1 wide. It has an adjustable height from 44 to 56 inches tall. Those dimensions are quite different. This should give you an idea of where you might locate these machines or how they would mesh with your décor.

Both fans are extremely light weight. The AM07 weighs 6.3 pounds while AM08 weighs 8.5 pounds. This allows you to effortlessly relocate your fan to a different room.

How do these fans work…?

As you’re probably well aware by now, these fans don’t have any blades. But how the heck do they generate that powerful air flow. Well, even though Dyson invents new technology, they don’t invent new laws of physics, but they do take advantage of it.

Well, first of all, let’s get a misunderstanding out of the way. These machines do actually have blades it’s just that they aren’t accessible to the user. There are nine asymmetrically aligned blades that are powered by a powerful motor. When the air is pushed through the front of the fan, air surrounding the sides of the fan are pushed in the direction the air is blowing. This process is called entrainment and it makes these fans much more efficient – both of these machines use less power than their predecessors. You can read more about it at how things work.

Performance

I can tell you, from playing around with Dyson fans in store that they are much more powerful and quiet than your average fan that you’d get from a department store. To test it out, I kept moving back further and further away from the fan to find out how far the breeze would reach. I was impressed by its performance.

Equally as impressive was the fact that the Dyson fan was extremely quiet. According to the product description, the AM08 and AM07 are quieter than their predecessors the AM03 and AM02 respectively. I think that you will be impressed with the impressed with either of these models.

Wide Range Tilt Head

The AM08 comes with a wide-range tilt head. This allows for more precise control of your air flow. The AM07 does not have this feature. It simply oscillates from side to side.

Remote Control

Operating the machines is very easy with the straight-forward remote. The remote controls are the same for both machines. They are curved and magnetized to store right on the fan itself. With it you can power your unit on or off, sleep timer, and oscillation control.

Settings and Convenient Features

Both of these machines come with 10 speed settings. This variable speed gives you more control over the precision of your air flow. The sleep timer allows you to program your machine to power off after a preset interval ranging from 15 minutes to 9 hours. Both of these machines oscillate, the AM07 has an oscillating range of 90 degrees while the AM08 has an oscillating range of 180 degrees. The unit is easy-to-clean you can simply wipe it down or use a Swiffer.

Summary

The Dyson AM07 vs AM08 is a comparison of two similar yet different machines. The main difference is that the AM07 is a tower fan and the AM08 is a pedestal fan. The pedestal fan gives you more precise control over the angle because the head tilts. The AM08 has an adjustable height base that gives you a height range of 44 to 56 inches from the bottom to the top of the fan. The height for the AM07 is just under 40 inches.

If it were me choosing between these two, I’d go with the AM08. I like that the pedestal fan gives you more flexibility over your air flow. In the end you can’t go wrong. You might prefer the tower fan, perhaps it’ll look better in your room.
