Garage Door Opener Compatibility

LiftMaster 877Max vs 877LM

LiftMaster 877Max

Both systems are built the same but utilize different frequencies to operate garage door openers. The 877Lm can only work with Security+ 2.0 garage door openers. These openers are those designed with a new frequency of 315MHz and having a yellow programming or learn button and two yellow antennas.

The 877Max on the other hand is designed to be backwards compatible. This simply means that it can work with any garage door opener manufactured as early as 1993. The openers can either have a yellow, purple, orange, reddish-orange, or green learn button, depending on the frequency design and security make. The color of the learn button determines the programming mode to be implemented in your 877Max keypad.

The 877Lm can work with newer model openers such as the 8165, 8355, 8500, 8550 models, while the 877max is more universal in its operation, being able to work with the models the 877lm works with as well as previous models such as the 3240, 3245M, and 3585 models among others.

Installation, Setup and Programming

These wireless keypads are simple and fast to install and setup. The products come prepackaged with the necessary mounting hardware for screwing the keypads to the wall.

For the 877Lm, it can be easily programmed by following the directions provided with both the device and the garage door opener. Once you push the Yellow Learn button on the main garage opener, enter your 4-digit PIN on the keypad, and press the Enter button.

Unlike the 877Lm, the programming steps for the 877Max are initiated by holding the * and # keys together until the keypad stops flashing. Then, press the Learn Button on the opener and enter your 4-digit PIN on the keypad. The remaining steps in the programming process depend on the color of the Learn Button of your opener. If your Learn Button is yellow, press the enter key once. If purple, then the Enter key should be pressed twice. For the red/orange and green Learn Buttons, the Enter key must be pressed 3 and 4 times respectively. To complete the programming and setup, press the 0 key on the keypad, and you are good to go.

For customers having door openers with motion sensors or detectors that turn on the opener light once movement is detected, it is important you turn off the sensor before trying to program your wireless keyless systems. This is because the opener and the keypad would not sync as long as the opener light is on.

Weight and Size

The 877Max has slightly larger dimensions than the 877Lm and yet is still the lighter of the two.

Color

Both have the same color: either gray or beige.

Security

Both keypads are equipped with a rolling code technology for security purposes. This technology changes the security code every time the system is used to open the door, thus creating a new code for the next access session. Even better, this in-built security feature aptly termed as Security+ 2.0 rolling code technology is more advanced and is able to eliminate any radio wave interference posed by hackers or jammers.

Convenient Features

LiftMaster 877LM

The buttons of the keypads light up once the device is operated, regardless of the time of day. Invariably, whether during daytime or in the night, the buttons are designed to produce a backlight for ease of use. This feature comes in handy if the keypads are installed or located in a low-light area.

These keyless entry systems also provide users with the option of a temporary code. This code or pin can be used to provide temporary access for neighbors, workmen, visitors, delivery personnel, service workers, contractors and the likes. This feature provides needed access in urgent times in case the owner is not physically present in the house, and at the same time, still ensures the security of the home, as the main personal pin still resides with the owner of the keypad.

They both come with a flip-up cover which serves to protect the units against unfavorable weather elements. However, few customers claimed that the covers could not effectively protect the keypads in the event of a strong wind, as the wind easily flipped up the cover, leaving the unit exposed.

The keypad can be programmed for more than one door, as long as different codes or pins are used for the doors. For the 877Lm whose compatibility range is not as wide as the 877Max, users must ensure that the multiple doors being programmed with the keypad have the yellow learn button.

Power

Classified as wireless devices, both are powered via 9-volt batteries included in the product’s packaging.

Durability

The keypad’s lid or cover is made of plastic and so is the hinge linking the cover to the main device. Several users claim this plastic construction makes the keypad not so durable and therefore, more prone to breaking if roughly handles. Therefore, all users are advised to handle their keypads with care and caution to ensure a long lifespan for the device.

The included batteries on the other hand are Lithium-ion and reputed to be long-lasting with a lifespan of about a year.

Summary

It is very obvious that while both keypads would work for the new frequency garage door openers, the 877Max has more of an edge as it is able to open older doors with lower frequencies. The universality of the 877Max makes it a more preferred option and even though it costs a few dollars more than the 877lm, we believe the extra dollars is worth it. Plus, a sale could change the price difference, causing the two keypad to be roughly sold at the same amount.
