Jiffy j2 vs j2000 Garment Steamer Comparison

Garment steamers like the models in the Jiffy j2 vs j2000 comparison are convenient small home appliances. These units are incredibly similar which is probably why you’re interested in knowing which one is better for you.

In some ways a steamer is much better than an iron because of the immense amount of steam that you can produce. Also some fabrics, like silk or clothing items that have multiple types of fabrics could work better with a steamer. For example, you can use a steamer to get wrinkles out of costumes that are made out of cotton and nylon. They can also be handy for drapery.

Below, check out what we think about these two little steamer machines. At the end, you will find the summary and a recommendation.

Jiffy J2 vs J2000: Which Steamer is best for you…?

Appearance and Size

Jiffy J2 – Garment Steamer

With a rectangular shape and roller wheels (some users complain that the wheels roll around while in use) these two steamers are nearly identical. The more modern looking j2000 has the water reservoir built into the machine. On the other hand the j2 has the water sitting on top of the machine – it looks pretty awkward, like a gallon of milk sitting on top of it.

These machines share the same dimensions: 10” Wide x 15” Long x 64” Tall (with the telescopic pole extended). They each are listed as weighing 18 pounds. And of course when they are completely filled with water, the j2 weighs more because the water reservoir is 1-gallon compared to ¾-gallon for the j2000.

Performance

Both of these machines are 1300-watt power houses with solid brass heating elements and are designed for residential and light commercial use. Both of them are quick to heat up – it takes just two minutes for these machines to be completely warmed up.

I think that it’s important to note that you will not get the same results as using an iron. Sure, you can take your clothes from completely unwearable to acceptable. These steamers will make the wrinkles literally fall out of your clothes right before your eyes. But you probably won’t be able to get fresh dry cleaner pressed results. If you’d like to have those kind of results then you should make sure that you pick up a metal steamer head (although it might get very hot).

Because the j2 has a larger water capacity its steam time per filling is 2 hours compared to 1.5 hours for the j2000.

The uses for these steamers aren’t limited to just garments, linens and drapery. You can also use these machines to remove help remove wall-paper but they weren’t designed for steam cleaning floors.

Water: to filter or not to filter…

Although lots of users use only tap water and get good results, you might want to use filtered water instead. With filtered or distilled water you will be able to avoid some of the scale build up that is going to occur with tap water.

Hose and Steamer Heads

Both units come with a 5.5-foot hose. Some people said that they thought that the hose got too hot but most of the reviews I’ve come across do not mention this complaint. Each of these machines comes with a 6-inch steamer head.

Pole

Most poles that accompany garments are telescopic – they collapse on themselves. The poles for these machines are a fixed height that makes the total height 64 inches – more than 5 feet. At the top of the pole there is a spot for the steamer head to sit on.

Durability

When you invest in an appliance, you want the thing to last so long that you feel you got your money’s worth. When looking through some of the reviews for the j2, I found quite a few folks actually said that they’ve had the Jiffy j2 for over two decades. And what’s even more is that these machines are actually claimed to still be going strong.

A quality build is part of the reason for longevity, I believe, and these machines have different exterior materials. The j2 has a die cast aluminum house while the j2000 has a “high-impact” plastic outer housing. The j2 definitely has the better exterior build.

Warranty

Both of these machines carry a 3 year warranty which is pretty decent for a steamer.

Summary

I like both of the units compared on this page, but which model is better for you? Should you go with the Jiffy j2 or the j2000? Both are powerful with 1300-watts of power. If it were me choosing between these two garment steamers, I’d go for the J2. While the j2000 has an updated design – the j2 looks kind of awkward – it’s just not enough to counter the fact that the j2 is the more proven machine.

I’ve come across many customers claiming to have the same j2 unit for years – decades even, in some cases. I find that kind of user feedback to be very useful when comparing products. Because that proves longevity. Also, the j2 is constructed out of a much more durable aluminum housing compared to plastic.

With its larger water reservoir, you get more steam time with the j2 compared to the j2000; 1.5 hours of steam versus 2 hours.
